Look closer, and it reveals a coded world beneath the surface.

Designed by Gretchen Heist, this sweater transforms the most iconic image of French culture — the corner bistro — into a covert map of intrigue. Window panes align into grid systems. Café chairs form cipher marks. Street lamps double as surveillance points. What appears nostalgic is actually tactical.

This is not a sweater.
It is a mission disguised as leisure.

Having grown up in her mother’s art studio, Gretchen brings a practice shaped by early exposure to art, narrative, and materials. Heist itself is an anagram of her mother’s maiden name—an inheritance turned into code.

    We celebrate and design for women who are beautifully complex, powerful, and unbound by convention. She embodies the dualities of the feminine archetype—refined yet romantic, strategic yet delicate, independent yet vulnerable. She does not choose one version of herself.     Like all great mysteries, each Gretchen Heist design has an exploration process. The viewer can experience the artwork from the first impression to discovering hidden details within. Every design is handcrafted and incorporates themes of psychology, symbology, and Trompe l’oeil details. Texture is essential to the experience of each piece, from textile fabrication to the incorporation of non-traditional notions into the work. Gretchen Heist blends artistic intention, handcrafted technique, and partnerships with contemporary artists to create designs that are expressions of wearable art.
